Background of the Study
Women have increasingly emerged as pivotal actors in peace-building initiatives, particularly in regions affected by conflict and social unrest. In Ihiala Local Government Area, Anambra State, women are playing transformative roles in mediating disputes and fostering community reconciliation (Obi, 2023). Their contributions, although often under-recognized, include grassroots mobilization, dialogue facilitation, and advocacy for human rights (Amadi, 2024). Despite cultural barriers that traditionally restrict their public participation, contemporary developments have created platforms where women’s voices are amplified. This shift is underpinned by national and international gender policies that recognize the importance of inclusive peace processes (Ezenwa, 2025). The study explores how women’s participation in peace-building not only challenges established gender norms but also enhances the sustainability of peace initiatives. It examines the strategies employed, the challenges encountered, and the impact of these efforts on social cohesion. The discussion draws on both historical accounts and recent empirical studies to frame the evolving role of women as mediators and change agents (Okeke, 2023).
Statement of the Problem (100 words)
In Ihiala, the contributions of women to peace-building initiatives are often marginalized despite their potential impact on community reconciliation. Institutional and societal biases limit their participation, resulting in peace processes that may not fully reflect community needs (Ugochukwu, 2024). This marginalization has impeded the overall effectiveness of peace initiatives and perpetuated gender inequality. There is a dearth of focused research on women’s roles in local peace-building, necessitating this study to identify challenges and propose strategies to enhance their engagement (Chinwe, 2025).
